Home Hardwood Installation

Wood Floor Installation will be one of the last steps in your remodeling, decorating or home building project. There are certain things that you should consider before proceeding with the project.

If you are doing the work yourself, make sure that you look closely through this site, for helpful information on important steps in your hardwood flooring installation. Our Do It Yourself section is coming soon.

If you prefer to hire a professional, be sure to check out the How to Hire a Contractor page, for useful advice on choosing and talking to hardwood flooring contractors.

No matter what avenue you will choose, it is important that your understand the process of hardwood installation. Simple mistake here, and you will have to face serious problems latter on.

Your research should include a visit to the web site of the manufacturer of your floor of choice. Here you should familiarize yourself with the hardwood that you chose, as well as the specific hardwood installation requirements that are different for each manufacturer and each type of floor.

It is builder's, professional installer's or your responsibility, to ensure the precessions are taken, that steps are followed and installation is done at the right moment in the construction, renovation or decorating process.

It is crucial that hardwood is installed only after other trades finished working in your home. Certain physical conditions must be met and proper steps must be taken to ensure a successful installation and preservation of the quality of the material.

Once you choose your floor, carefully considering your decorating style as well as the lifestyle of your family, you are ready to place an order.

At the same time, you should also take a look at your existing sub-flooring. From your visit to the manufacturer's web site, you will know what kind of subflooring is required for your choice of hardwood. If what you have in your home is not up to standard, you need to install new subflooring prior to hardwood installation. Be sure not to skip this step, as doing so, may void the warranty on your new hardwood floor.

Measure your area accurately. You need to add to that number about 2% to 5% depending on your skill level, shape of the area and type of hardwood installation as well as the quality of wood that you are considering. If you are planning on innovative designs, inlaid borders, or diagonal hardwood installation, the percentage that you need to add to your original area will be even greater.

Familiarize yourself with the refund policy of the hardwood flooring store you are dealing with. Usually unused, and unopened boxes can be returned to the store for a refund, however restocking charges will probably apply. Before you return any unused wood, be sure to remember, that down the road, you may need that wood for repairs. It may be wise to hold on to it.

Once your installation area is ready and proper subflooring is in place, you can have your hardwood delivered to your home. Make sure that delivery date is scheduled on dry day, with no humid or rain. Your wood should be placed in the intended installation area in such a way, that there is air circulation possible between the boxes. Temperature in the room should be kept steady and close to temperature suggested by the manufacturer. Allow hardwood flooring to acclimatize in the installation area for about a week.

Once the acclimatization process is complete, you may proceed with hardwood installation.
